Aries Season Medicinal Plants

Plants embody mythologies that help us understand archetypal expressions and give us a framework and context for understanding the actions and energetic architecture of the plants and herbal medicine.

Aries season, which is from Vernal Equinox to 20th of April, is the season of renewal and initiation. Earth’s fire is bursting with the initial ”pulse of life”. Aries embodies the spark of energy that is required to start something from nothing. Aries burns with the cardinal fire of Mars. It is a powerhouse, and divine spark of life burning with an initiatory force that brings the seeds out of the darkness. Observing the seasons in nature informs the astrological seasons and vise versa.

The plants that we see bursting forth in the early part of spring are plants that tend to sooth and cool the hot Aries fire. Plants we see and want to harvest now are Nettles, Lemon Balm and Peppermint. There are many others but these are some examples. They are nourishing and soothing to the nervous system, calming the mind and rejuvenating the body. Aries is associated with the head, blood, immune system, nervous system, adrenals and the febrile mechanism. Nettles embodies the Aries archetype perfectly, being full of iron like Mars, having serrated leaves that sting or burn and being an inflammation modulator as well as a cooling, blood building powerhouse. It also pops up during allergy season which happens generally during Aries season and is helpful to quell allergies.

Lemon Balm or Melissa is a nervine which is gentile and relaxes tension. It is a sour and cooling diaphoretic. Peppermint is a stimulating and yet relaxing diaphoretic as well. A tea made from these freshly harvested plants is the perfect springtime tea. In terms of flavor profiles these plants taste delicious together. Enjoy.
